State of the Union
February 12, 2013
In his State of the Union Address on Tuesday to a joint session of Congress, President Obama spoke of rebuilding “a thriving middle class.” He laid out plans for job-creating infrastructure projects and called for an increase in the minimum wage to $9 per hour. He spoke about the development of alternative sources of energy and the need to reverse global warming. He advocated improved pre-school education and talked about making college more affordable by making colleges more accountable. Sen. Bernie Sanders watched from a seat in the packed House chamber. “President Obama gave a strong speech with a sensible set of priorities. I look forward to working with his administration to create the millions of new jobs we desperately need, to improve our pre-school and educational system and to combat climate change, one of the great threats facing our planet,” Sanders said.
