The "most influential" member of Congress on Twitter was Sen. Bernie Sanders, according to a study by Edelman public affairs. Following Sanders was House Speaker John Boehner and Rep. Keith Ellison. Sanders also is a winner of the vox populi Shorty Award for "best member of Congress on social media." The official announcement was set to be made at the 4th Annual Shorty Awards ceremony on Monday evening New York.
"Social media provide a very important mechanism to communicate directly with people about issues that often don't get the attention they deserve by the mainstream media," Sanders said.
"We have seen lively and smart conversations on my Facebook, Twitter and Google+ pages on issues like the collapsing middle class, growing income and wealth disparity, increased poverty in our country and the lack of adequate health and dental care," the senator added.
