Irene There's plenty of damage still visible around Pittsfield, Vt., and some homes remain in ruins, but most of the 550 residents focused Sunday on the community spirit that emerged after Tropical Storm Irene hit one year ago. The afternoon was filled with activities including a town photo, a cookout, and speeches by Gov. Peter Shumlin, Sen. Bernard Sanders and Rep. Peter Welch, the Rutland Herald and Times Argus reported. LINK

Irene Gov. Shumlin joined Sen. Sanders for a late-afternoon barbeque behind the Pittsfield town hall, ABC 22 and Fox 44 reported. Sanders praised "Vermont at its best" and said the congressional delegation will continue working closely with Gov. Deficit Hawk Hypocrites There are responsible ways to move this country toward deficit reduction. Unfortunately, "deficit hawks" like Romney and Ryan want cut Social Security to cover the costs they incurred by going to war in Iraq and Afghanistan, and cut Medicare and Medicaid to cover the costs of the tax breaks for the rich, Sanders wrote in a column published by The (Youngstown, Ohio) VindicatorLINK

Social Security Most Americans say go ahead and raise taxes if it will save Social Security benefits for future generations. And raise the retirement age, if you have to. Both options are preferable to cutting monthly benefits, even for people who are years away from applying for them, according to a new Associated Press poll. LINK


Vermont

UVM Convocation The fall term begins today for students at the University of Vermont. The incoming class of 2,400 freshmen includes about 540 Vermonters and students from 40 other states and 10 countries, the Burlington Free Press reported. LINK

Happy Anniversary Sen. Patrick Leahy and his wife, Marcelle marked their 50th wedding anniversary Saturday. Leahy and the former Marcelle Pomerleau were married Aug. 25,1962 at St. Mark's Church in Burlington, AP reported. LINK
