Comcast, the country’s largest cable provider, and NBC Universal, one of the country’s largest media conglomerates, want to combine forces and pad their bottom line.  But at a time when a small number of giant media corporations already control what the American people see, hear, and read, we do not need another media conglomerate with control over the production and distribution of the news.  What we need is less concentration of ownership, more diversity, more local ownership, and more viewpoints.

In an effort to push the merger through, Comcast and NBC have ramped up their lobbying efforts and their campaign donations.  Comcast alone donated to half the Senate and three quarters of the House in the last election cycle.  It looks like Comcast is trying to buy this deal, and as a result, no one is paying attention to the $2.4 billion worth of harm that a former Chief Economist for the FCC estimates such a merger would cause millions of consumers like you.

Even in the past few days, we’ve seen some ominous signs of what’s to come if the FCC were to okay merger.  In the midst of two highly extensive Federal review processes, when you would think Comcast would act with the utmost caution, the company has told Level 3, a Netflix affiliate, that it will not allow Level 3 to stream Netflix video to Comcast subscribers unless Level 3 agrees to pay substantial  new fees.  You see, Comcast has its own business streaming video to consumers—a business that directly competes with Netflix—and has every incentive to make life difficult for both Netflix and Level 3.

We shouldn’t be surprised.  These are the kinds of things that happen when a company like Comcast wears too many hats.  It’s writing on the wall: if Comcast is acting like this now; things will be far, far worse if this massive merger is approved.

Comcast is already measuring the drapes.  They have announced a new team of executives for NBC.  They have launched a joint advertising campaign in Capitol Hill newspapers in order to influence lawmakers.  They seem to have forgotten a pesky thing called “the law” in which the FCC and YOU get to weigh in on whether you think this is good for our country.

That is why you should write the FCC today by filling out the form on the right and clicking “send email” now!
