The Progressive Approach to Health Care
"We need to move toward a national health care program that guarantees health care to all as a right, not a privilege."
- U.S. Senator Bernie Sanders, member of the Senate health committee
There is another side of the debate that we hear and read about every day. The United States is the only major country without a national health care program. Polls show very strong support for a national health care program. Our current lack of a system is extremely inefficient and ineffective. We spend twice as much per capita on health care as any other country. According to the World Health Organization, the United States ranks 37th in terms of health system performance and 72nd in overall population health.
Senator Sanders has introduced the Senate’s only single-payer health care bill, which would establish a program administered by the states. He also proposed a pilot program which would allow five states to move forward on providing state-sponsored universal health care coverage. And he has pushed for a massive expansion of the community health center program to provide access to care for every American.
There is another side to the health care debate and you can keep up to date on it here.
