Dark Money, Independent Groups Dominating Ad War In 2014

WASHINGTON -- Independent groups, especially those supporting the Republican Party, are dominating the air wars ahead of the 2014 midterm elections, according toa new report from the Wesleyan Media Project.

Overall, independent groups, led by the Koch brothers' Americans for Prosperity, accounted for 49 percent the $62.2 million in broadcast and national cable television advertising purchased for the 2014 elections from Jan. 1, 2013, through April 24, 2014, the report found.

The majority of the independent group spending during this period -- 58 percent -- came from "dark money" nonprofits that do not disclose their donors, and the majority of these groups support Republicans, the report found. This advertising data backs up the finding that Republican donors have largely fled the disclosed world of super PACs for the anonymous world of dark money.
