Sanders: Bush's Environmental Plan Too Late (WCAX-TV)

President Bush unveiled an environmental plan on Wednesday, urging Congress to pass legislation that will encourage development of alternative fuels. A part of his strategy is to pass energy legislation that "specifies a new fuel economy standard of 35 miles per gallon by 2020, and requires fuel producers to supply 36-billion gallons of renewable fuel by 2022."

But Democrats and environmentalists were quick to denounce the President's plan, which set a broad goal but offered just a general outline on how to make it happen.

Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders says that Bush's plan isn't serious enough.

"I'm glad that President Bush has finally acknowledged the crisis of global warming. Unfortunately, it's about seven years too late and his proposals are far too weak if we're going to be serious about breaking our dependency on fossil fuels and moving toward energy efficiency and sustainable energy," Sanders said.

Sanders also said that he hopes the President will support a bill he proposed that offers tax credit programs for sustainable energies like wind and solar.
