Senator Bernie Sanders spoke at the Center for Summer Learning about the need for investing in summer learning programs and passing legislation that helps close the academic achievement gap. Senator Sanders was invited to speak as part of National Summer Learning Day, which celebrates the importance of high-quality summer learning opportunities in the lives of young people and their families.
Senator Bernie Sanders met with Brittny Buck of Bridport and Heather Osicky of Ferrisburg. Both are members of the Vergennes, Vermont Chapter of the Future Farmers of America (FFA) and were in the nation’s capital attending the 2007 Washington Leadership Conference. The week-long program helps FFA members improve their leadership, team building and citizenship skills to prepare them for leadership roles in their chapters, communities and their future careers.
Also attending the meeting was Dori Sharp from Colchester, Vermont. Dori is a member of the National Young Leaders Conference, which brings high school students from around the country to Washington, D.C. as part of the group's commitment to gaining a better understanding of the political process.
Senator Bernie Sanders met with Deborah Lisi-Baker and Janet Dermody of the Vermont Center for Independent Living (VCIL) to discuss opportunities for creating equal rights and full participation for all Vermonters with disabilities. The center is a statewide, nonprofit organization that works to promote the dignity, independence, and civil rights of Vermonters with disabilities.
Senator Sanders held a town meeting this weekend with special guest Bill McKibben. The turnout was fantastic and the enthusiasm was high as Bernie and Bill spoke on the need for the country to shift its economic focus to sustainable energy and the creation of green collar jobs.
During snacks and coffee the crowd was treated to a performance by the Bluegrass Gospel Project singers Patti Casey and Taylor Armerding, followed by new found Vermont hip hoppers X10 made up of Pat Leene, Colin Arisman and Luke Martin.

Senator Sanders spent Wednesday July 4th celebrating Independence Day with Vermonters in Warren, Rochester and Bristol. Below the Senator can be seen marching in Warren's annual 4th of July parade. The Senator enjoyed the community chicken barbeque in Rochester and speaking with folks about pressing issues in Bristol.
