BURLINGTON, Vt., March 16 – Senator Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) called “completely unacceptable” the $165 million in bonuses that American International Group doled out to its executives over the weekend despite accepting billions in government aid to stay afloat.
Calling A.I.G. “one of the major perpetrators of the financial disaster,” Sanders said “it is completely unacceptable that these executives at A.I.G. get even one penny in bonuses.”
“The time is long overdue for a clean sweep of all of these CEOs,” Sanders added during a press conference at his Senate office here. “We have got to look at a new Wall Street.”
The Federal Reserve last fall prevented the insurance giant’s collapse with an $85 billion emergency loan. Taxpayer assistance has now grown to $170 billion, and the government owns nearly 80 percent of the company.
