Sanders Receives Honor from Military Wives

WASHINGTON, May 22 – At a ceremony on Capitol Hill today U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders was presented with the Award of Excellence from the Gold Star Wives of America.

The Gold Star Wives of America is comprised of widows and widowers whose spouses died while serving in the U.S. armed forces or as a result of service-connected disabilities. The group is one of the country’s strongest advocates for military survivors and their families.

The Gold Star Wives presented the award for Sanders’ “tireless efforts to decrease any and all burdens placed on military survivors,” and “for his longstanding commitment in seeking equity for military surviving spouses and their children.”

“I am humbled and honored to accept this award,” said Sanders. “The men and women who have given their lives in service to this country have left behind loved ones who deserve a grateful nation’s support. I look forward to continue working with the Gold Star Wives to better serve military survivors.”

Sanders’ comprehensive veterans legislation would provide grief counseling, extend payments to survivors with children and expand benefits for spouses who choose to remarry.
