Community Health Centers

The new national health care law provides a major boost to community health centers.  Senator Bernie Sanders led the effort in the Senate to set aside $11 billion over five years for the family-practice clinics that offer affordable primary care, dental care, mental health counseling and low-cost prescription drugs.  The health care overhaul also provides funding to increase the number of primary care doctors and other health care professionals. Mary K. Wakefield, the administrator of the Health Resources and Services Administration, oversees community health centers across the nation. At Sanders’ invitation, she visited Vermont last year to see community health centers in action in Plainfield and Hardwick.  In an interview published Monday by The Washington Post, she talked about the importance of primary health care and the legislation to double the number of community health centers.
