Sen. Bernie Sanders supports President Obama's measures to make college more affordable. Capping student loan payments at 10 percent of discretionary income next year would save 1.6 million Americans hundreds of dollars. The U.S. Department of Education estimates that in Vermont more than 4,000 current students would be able to lower their monthly payments through "Pay As You Earn." More than 15,000 borrowers from Vermont would be able to reduce their interest rates and simplify their payments by consolidating their loans. "The president's announcement is a step forward and I support his efforts," Sanders said. "We need to go even further," he added, "to make sure that college is accessible and affordable for every student, regardless of family income."
