Americans: End Tax Breaks for the Rich

As Congress debates the fate of the Bush-era tax cuts that expire on Dec. 31, there is strong support for ending tax breaks for the wealthiest Americans. The nationwide poll for CBS News and The New York Times found that 53 percent of Americans favor a proposal to increase taxes on households earning $250,000 or more.  More than 4,000 of you who have taken our own online survey favor ending tax breaks for the rich by a lopsided margin of 10 to 1.  Sen. Bernie Sanders on Monday told radio host Jeff Santos that he would end the tax cut for the top 2 percent of Americans and divide the $700 billion generated over the next decade devote half to deficit reduction and half to repairing crumbling roads and bridges and other infrastructure projects.
