Budget Debate Begins in Senate
The Senate on Monday began what was expected to be a week-long debate on a budget for the coming year. Sen. Bernie Sanders, the ranking member of the Senate Budget Committee, laid out the case against the proposal that would make $5.5 trillion in spending cuts and overhaul of Medicare, Medicaid, food stamps and other programs for working families. Sanders said it was “morally repugnant” that Republicans in both the Senate and House budget committees push through a plan that would protect tax breaks for the rich and large corporations while cutting benefits for millions of Americans. He also faulted a plan to increase Pentagon spending.
