Congress returned Monday from a Thanksgiving break for a three-week, year-end session. With the onset of winter weather, one of Sen. Bernie Sanders' top priorities is funding for a home heating assistance program that helps seniors and families with children afford to keep their homes warm. With fuel prices projected to set records this winter, Sanders is leading efforts in Congress to forestall steep cuts in funding for the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program. Other topics on the agenda as Congress closes out the year include measures aimed at creating jobs as well as extending unemployment benefits to help the long-term unemployed cope with the worst economic downturn since the Great Depression. The Senate also is expected once again to take up a proposal, first introduced by Sanders last spring, to enact a surtax on millionaires and billionaires.
