Democracy or Oligarchy?
The Senate will vote on a constitutional amendment to limit money in politics when Congress reconvenes in September. The amendment would undo Supreme Court decisions in Citizens United and other cases that have let millionaires and billionaires spend huge amounts of money on candidates and campaigns. Sen. Bernie Sanders has been one of the leaders in Congress calling for a constitutional amendment. “The major issue of our time is whether the United States of America retains its democratic foundation or whether we devolve into an oligarchic form of society where a handful of billionaires have almost absolute control over the political and economic life of the nation,” Sanders writes in the current edition of The Progressive.
