In an outcome that will help veterans, the U.S. Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services allowed the Vermont Veterans Home in Bennington to keep federal funding while it works to improve care. Sen. Bernie Sanders, a member of the Senate Committee on Veterans' Affairs, had worked behind the scenes to resolve concerns that could have resulted in a cutoff of federal funding. "As a nation we have a shared responsibility to make sure that the men and women who have served this nation honorably receive the highest quality health care, housing and other benefits they deserve. There simply is no excuse for providing anything less. That goal can be best achieved if the federal government continues to work constructively with the state of Vermont to improve care at the Vermont Veterans Home. That is why I urged officials in Washington to give the state time to address the shortcomings at the Vermont Veterans Home. I am very pleased that they have done just that," Sanders said.
