Help for Veterans
Legislation to hold the Department of Veterans Affairs accountable and to expand health care, education and job-training benefits is being drafted by Sen. Bernie Sanders. The chairman of the Senate Committee on Veterans’ Affairs, Sanders plans to introduce the legislation after the Senate returns from a Memorial Day recess. The bottom line, Sanders said Tuesday is an interview on “Andrea Mitchell Reports,” is to make sure that every veteran in this country gets the high-quality health care that he or she needs in a timely manner. Interviewed later Tuesday by the Rev. Al Sharpton, Sanders recalled how Senate Republicans last winter sidetracked his bill to expand veterans’ benefits. Despite the support of the American Legion, VFW, Disabled American Veterans and virtually every other major veterans group in the country, when it came time to vote “we had only two Republican senators on board,” Sanders said.
