Help the Middle Class
The House on Tuesday voted to disapprove a Senate-passed bill that would have extended the payroll tax cut and unemployment insurance for two months. The Republican-controlled chamber voted mostly along party lines to seek a conference with the Senate to work out differences between the two chambers' bills. Unless there is a breakthrough, the move means taxes on middle class workers will go up on Jan. 1 and that extended unemployment benefits will expire for those struggling to find work during the worst economic downturn since the Great Depression. Sen. Bernie Sanders was optimistic. "I think an agreement is going to be reached," he said in an interview on Tuesday on WCAX-TV. "The middle class does need tax relief, there's no question about that," he added. Sanders also said he would continue to fight for an increase in home heating aid so seniors and families with children in Vermont stay warm this winter.
