The Senate on Wednesday approved an arms treaty with Russia and a bill to help 9/11 rescue workers. Earlier in the day, President Obama signed into law a bill passed Saturday repealing the ban on gays serving openly in the military. The treaty between the former Cold War enemies is the most sweeping arms-reduction pact in nearly two decades. The 9/11 bill will cover the cost of medical care for rescue workers sickened by toxic fumes, dust and smoke after the 2001 attacks on the World Trade Center. Republicans relented after their efforts to block the bill came under a barrage of criticism even from Republicans, like former New York Mayor Rudolph Giuallini and Fox News. The measure on don't ask, don't tell reversed a policy then Rep. Bernie Sanders voted against 17 years ago.
