Protecting the Environment
Senate leaders on environmental issues spoke out on Monday against proposals to strip the Environmental Protection Agency of its authority to limit carbon emissions from power plants, refineries and other stationary sources. A separate bill that would bar the federal government from regulating greenhouse gas emissions under any environmental law already on the books also is being pushed by Republicans on the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee. “Voters last November did not vote for more pollution, but Republicans want to put the EPA out of business in order to roll back clean air protections, make us even more dependent on fossil fuels, and stop the United States from reducing greenhouse gas emissions,” Sen. Bernie Sanders said. “This bill must be stopped in its Big Oil tracks,” added Sanders, a member of the committee and chairman of the green jobs subcommittee.
