Retirement Security?
A little-noticed provision in a massive bill that the Senate approved last weekend will allow deep cuts in pensions for some current retirees. The provision would upend 40 years of federal law protecting the pensions for millions of retired workers who earned benefits over decades of loyal work. Former truck drivers, construction workers and supermarket checkout clerks are examples of the retirees whose pensions could be cut by as much as 50 percent in some cases. “I’ve talked to some of the union leaders on this and they’re outraged,” Sanders said Thursday in an interview with radio host Ed Schultz. “I will do everything I can to help find money so that workers don’t see cuts in their pensions.”
