Snail Mail
U.S. Postal Service managers want to cut an estimated $3 billion in costs by closing 252 mail processing centers, including one in White River Junction, Vt. David Williams, a Postal Service VP, told reporters at a briefing on Monday in Washington that the practical effect of the closings would be to eliminate the chance a first-class stamped letter would arrive the next day. Sen. Bernie Sanders already has introduced legislation to save the Postal Service. Before catching a flight to Washington on Monday, Sanders held an impromptu press conference at the Burlington Airport. "The next step, and most important step, is to make sure that the Postal Service does not start making massive cuts before Congress has a chance to act. We have legislation. There are other good pieces of legislation which I think can begin addressing some of the very serious problems facing the Postal Service."
