State of the Union
President Obama will deliver his State of the Union address to a special joint session of Congress on Jan. 24. On the day before the speech, Sen. Bernie Sanders will announce the winner of his annual Vermont high school student State of the Union essay contest. Altogether, some 250 students from about 30 schools participated in the competition. The essays are now being judged by five teachers. They'll winnow the entries to 15 finalists, from which the winners will be selected. Entrants came from all corners of Vermont. Students entered the contest from Cannan Memorial High School in the Northeast Kingdom to Mount Anthony High School in Bennington and Brattleboro Union High School. The greatest number of entries, by far, came from Champlain Valley Union High School.
