The American Census

The U.S. Census Bureau on Monday launched a campaign to urge the more than 300 million Americans to fill out the once-a-decade census forms.  Census Director Robert Groves was at Times Square in New York City for the nationwide kickoff of the Portrait of America campaign.  Altogether, the Census Bureau is staging 800 events around the country - from the Super Bowl and the NCAA Final Four to a rally in Burlington, Vt.  - as part of a campaign to urge people to fill out and return forms that will be sent to about 120 million households. Vermont's population, according to the latest Census Bureau estimate, stood at 621,760 as of last July 1. That total represented a small increase over the year before and about a 2 percent increase since April 2000.

The Census Bureau estimates that the U.S. population is growing by one person every 14 seconds, and calculates that the final population figure for 2010 will be 308,400,408.
