The Billionaire Class

The Billionaire Class

Forbes on Monday released its annual list of American billionaires.  They are richer than last year. The top 10 include the politically-aggressive Charles and David Koch, the brothers now worth a combined $85.8 billion. Also up there are the Waltons, the Wal-Mart fortune heirs. America’s largest private employer pays workers so little they must rely on food stamps and other government assistance to survive. Altogether, the wealthiest 400 Americans are now worth a record $2.29 trillion and have increased their net worth by $270 billion since last year. They own more wealth than 150 million Americans at the other end of the wealth.  “We need candidates who are prepared to stand up without apology representing the working families of America and are prepared to take on the billionaire class which controls so much of America,” Sen. Bernie Sanders said in an interview for Salon that was published on Sunday before the latest Forbes list was announced.
