The Week in Review

Presidents and members of Congress headed to Boston for Senator Edward M. Kennedy’s funeral mass on Saturday. A private burial service was set afterward at Arlington National Cemetery.  Before crossing Memorial Bridge, the motorcade route to the cemetery included one last stop at the U.S. Capitol for a final farewell from current and former staff gathered on the Senate steps. In the 47 years since the youngest of the Kennedy brothers first climbed those same marble steps, Senator Kennedy’s work touched the lives of millions of Americans giving seniors greater dignity, families new opportunities, and children a better education.  He died without realizing what he called "the cause of my life," an overhaul of the nation's health care system. “While we have not yet achieved that, people should not understate the role he played in expanding health care,” Senator Bernie Sanders said. He cited Kennedy’s role in the creation of community health centers, improved health insurance for children, and expanded mental health care. And in the words of one of the Massachusetts senator’s most stirring orations, “The work goes on, the cause endures, the hope still lives, and the dream shall never die.”
