Sen. Bernie Sanders, ranking member of the Senate Budget Committee, said Wednesday at a press conference on Capitol Hill that Republicans have gone too far by producing a budget that would punish the sick, elderly, poor and students saddled with debt.

“In the state of Vermont, young people are struggling to figure out a way they can afford to go to college,” said Sanders. “Those who graduate are stuck with oppressive debt that they carry for decades. The Republican budget responds to this crisis by cutting mandatory Pell Grants by almost $90 billion over a 10-year period and increasing the cost of college for more than 8 million Americans.”
