We Are One Nation
"Vermont is one of the most beautiful states in this country," Sen. Bernie Sanders told a network news anchor on Wednesday before describing the devastation from Sunday's deluge. "Hundreds of roads have been damaged and closed. Dozens and dozens of bridges have been destroyed. We don't know how many hundreds or thousands of homes have been damaged. It's horrendous," he said. In a sliver of good news, the U.S. Transportation Department allotted $5 million in emergency funds to help rebuild the state's highways and bridges. Meanwhile, leading Republicans are demanding that any relief must be matched with federal spending cuts. "Historically in this country we have understood that when communities and states experience disasters, we as a nation come together to address those. That is what being a nation is about," Sanders told The New York Times.
