Year in Review – Made in America
The National Museum
of American History this year opened a gift shop that sells only American-made
merchandise. The change came "thanks to a determined senator," Diane
Sawyer said on ABC World News. About this time one year ago, Sanders had gone
shopping for gifts for his grandchildren at the museum. He noticed a counter
stocked with small busts of U.S. presidents from George Washington to Barack
Obama. When he turned them upside down, the American presidents were made in
China. Most of the other merchandise in the gift shop, it turned out, also came
from China and other low-wage countries. He raised the issue with the
Smithsonian Institution, which runs the history museum and 18 others.
Sanders returned to the history museum in June to check out a gift shop that had
been newly restocked with made-in-America merchandise. He called the move a
good start, but hoped for a greater effort to sell American-made merchandise in
all Smithsonian gift stores. "Any museum owned by the American people,
discussing American history, should have American products," Sanders said.
"I'm proud to see that in a short period of time, there have been
changes."
