Local health centers plan improvements

Officials at the Community Health Centers of the Rutland Region plan to offer new urgent care services at their Rutland location, possibly by the fall, with the help of a $752,500 grant from the federal Affordable Care Act’s Community Health Center Fund.

Six grants from the fund, totaling almost $5.5 million, were awarded to Vermont health care centers, according to an announcement made Wednesday by the office of Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt.

Two other local federally-qualified health centers, the Battenkill Valley Health Center and the Springfield Medical Care System, each received $1 million.

In a statement, Sanders, who serves as the ranking member of the Senate Subcommittee on Primary Health, said he was proud that the number of patients getting health care at federally-qualified health centers in Vermont and around the country is continuing to increase.\

“I am pleased to see Vermont receive these much-needed awards, which will allow our community health centers to serve even more Vermonters who today lack adequate access to affordable health care,” he said.
