Last Friday, I visited senior centers, summer programs, health centers, recreation and transportation areas, and a farmers market in Plainfield and Hardwick. To the Vermonters I met with: the very best part of my job is sitting down with you, learning about your work, and hearing your thoughts about the future of our country.

You’re likely hearing a lot about the budget bill we’re working on, which I believe is the most significant piece of legislation for working people since the Great Depression. As Budget Committee Chairman, I want to give you an update on what’s in the bill and how it meets your needs.

There are too many families in Vermont and throughout this country, who are struggling to raise their kids. In fact, shamefully, the United States has one of the highest rates of childhood poverty of any major country on earth. That is why I am delighted to inform you that, as a result of the American Rescue Plan passed several months ago and signed into law by President Biden, historic action has been taken to make it easier for moms, dads, and caregivers to raise their children. One of the key provisions of that legislation is a major expansion of the Child Tax Credit.

In the richest country in the history of the world, no one should go hungry — ever. Sadly, too many of our friends and neighbors — including thousands of children and older Vermonters — are hungry. As the state begins to reopen and recover, and schools close for the summer, I want to make sure everyone knows that help is still available and must remain so until no Vermonter goes to bed hungry.

One of my favorite parts of my job as your senator is getting around the state to meet with Vermonters and learn about your experiences. Last week, I had the pleasure of speaking with many Vermonters in Winooski and Colchester, including students, municipal leaders, and law enforcement.
